It’s that time of the year… The new year has started and New Year’s resolutions are on the top of our minds! Most of us are setting ourselves new goals for 2022, in the hope that this year it will all be different – that we won’t fail.
But every single year, we do the same thing over and over again: we set our expectations too high and give up too easily. We find thousands of excuses to not put in the work. We are either “too busy”, “too tired”, “too weak”, “too afraid” etc. (sounds familiar, right?).
The fact is, over 50% of women make New Year’s resolutions – fitness and health-related resolutions top the list. But 3 months in, only 8% are still going. Do you want to be one of them? Yes? Then it’s time to find your WHY.
At the beginning of the year, most people usually focus on the end goal, on the WHAT. e.g. eat healthier, lose 10 pounds, exercise 3 times a week. If they already failed once, they might think about the HOW, e.g. by buying healthy foods, by following a certain diet, by getting a gym membership. However, rarely anyone ever thinks about the bigger picture – the WHY.
Why do I want to eat healthier?
Why do I want to lose weight?
Why do I want to start exercising more often?
A lot of these fitness and health resolutions fail because people haven’t figured out why they made them in the first place. Your resolutions shouldn’t be created based on what someone else is telling you to change or on what others are doing.
Finding the reason why YOU want to make a change is a huge part of making that change last. When motivation fails, it is necessary to have a concrete WHY to get you back on track.
For example, many people make a resolution to lose weight. The reasons/the WHYs behind it could be:
- to feel better
- to gain confidence
- to be healthier
- to have more energy
For example, to lose weight to feel better or gain confidence is a resolution with meaning and purpose. Knowing WHY you are doing something will help you get through tough times and will keep you going!
Here are some examples of goals with what could be the reason behind it (What & Why):
- I want to go to the gym regularly so that I feel stronger and more confident
- I want to eat healthier so that I feel more energized on a daily basis
- I want to try new workouts so that I have more fun while exercising
- I want to stretch more so that I can avoid any unnecessary injuries in 2022/feel less tense
- I want to start doing yoga so that I can find more balance in my life
- I want to start running so that I move my body more
Let’s take the first example: I want to go to the gym regularly so that I feel stronger
The goal is to go to the gym regularly (WHAT), and the meaning behind it is “to feel stronger and more confident” (WHY).
Now, let’s say you have the same what & why. Every time you don’t feel like going to the gym, you have to remind yourself WHY you wanted to go in the first place. Tell yourself every single time you are about to bail, “I want to do it because I want to feel strong, and it helps me to feel more confident”. By putting the reason behind your goal, you are much more likely to hold yourself accountable.
It is crucial that you take some time at the beginning of the year to ask yourself WHY do I want to do WHAT and why is it important to me? #FindYourWhy
Write your WHY on your mirror, make it your screensaver, or post it on your fridge or anywhere else where you might see it regularly.
Your WHY is what will keep you going and make you accomplish your goals!
#FindYourWhy COMMUNITY CHALLENGE
Further, we want to encourage everybody to better themselves with our #FindYourWhy Community Challenge.
It is not a classic challenge in terms of being better than somebody else or achieving something specific.
It’s not about having the biggest (physical) transformation, it’s not about running 5k the fastest, it’s none of that.
#FindYourWhy is a personal journey to change your life. No one’s reason to make a healthy change to their life is better than someone else’s. Your reason why, is exactly that, YOUR reason why. You’re not doing this for anybody else, but YOU!
Throughout January, we want to give back to the community and support women who decide to better themselves. That’s why we will be randomly choosing 1 person every day to receive a massive $250 Women’s Best gift card
All you have to do is tag @womensbest and #FindYourWhy in your posts or stories and show/tell us what your goal is and why you want to achieve it.
Help us spread the word and encourage as many women around the world as possible to make this their year!
